Nursing Ink

by Nursetopia on December 8, 2011

Brain Pickings is one of my favorite curated blogs. I can always count on it for inspiration. (Thank you, Brain Pickings!) One book I’ve added to my “must read” list as a result of Brain Pickings is Science Ink. It looks amazing, and it made me wonder about nursing and medical tattoos.

I did a quick search and found lots of pin-up nurses and zombie nurses but nothing that really made me think, “Wow, that’s a pretty neat tattoo.” Any nurses (or other healthcare professionals) have a tattoo nod to the profession?

I have see some nurses with caduceus tattoos. I do not have any ink myself and don’t think I will get any either.

I have a coworker or two with “nurse” inked on a limb. I love some of the tats in the photos you posted.

I know. The pics he captured were great. Lots of intriguing tattoos. It made me question what our colleagues have thought up to put on their bodies. I’m sure there are many just as fascinating.

I have three tattoos. None of them medical. However, in my profession, especially in my prior enlisted military profession, there are lot of Hospital Corpsmen tattoos. Specifically, Hospital Corpsmen who have even stationed with the Marine Corps in a Corpsman status. The NEC code (Navy Enlisted Classification) for Field Medical Service Technician is 8404. So you see a lot of that number within the tattoos. Lots of EGAs (Eagle, Globe, and Anchor – the Marine Corps logo). Here’s a Google Image search of “FMF tattoos”: http://www.google.com/search?q=fmf+tattoos&hl=en&client=safari&rls=en&prmd=imvns&source=lnms&tbm=isch&ei=syznTunCDdH1sQLJv9XnCA&sa=X&oi=mode_link&ct=mode&cd=2&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1228&bih=664
